Ones to Watch: Bell

17/7/08
She’s drawn early comparisons to a young Bjork, yet she grew up in Moscow and Alaska, far from Bjork’s native Iceland. Still, her voice echoes one of electronica’s leading artists. But she’s also created her own identity with her voice. Simply put, it’s stunning.
“For me and my tastes and sounds, (Bjork’s) the best comparison I can hope for. I love Bjork’s music, so to a degree it’s pretty natural to recognize your influences, especially when you’re beginning,” Bell said. “It’s an honor.”

Comparisons between the two escalated when Bell covered Bjork’s “It’s Oh So Quiet” for a Bjork cover album released earlier this year by the music blog Stereogum.

“It’s funny because there were so many people shaking their finger at me, being like ‘You’re going to get even more comparisons now. You really shouldn’t do this.’ I thought, not only is this an awesome opportunity, but I thought that actually doing a Bjork song I’d make a wormhole in space and come out the other side, and it was my own little take on it,” Bell said. “I remember telling someone who said, ‘You really shouldn’t do this.’ I was like, ‘I’m going to make a hole into the space-time continuum where I’m going to dive into all these Bjork comparisons, and I’ll come out the other side.’”

And that’s exactly what happened to Olga Bell. Once a classically trained pianist, who began playing the black and white keys at age seven, Bell wound up at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Over the past few years, Bell has worked on putting together tracks, posting them on her MySpace page. They immediately drew attention. Her alluring and addictive voice backed by her piano arrangements and superb programming churned out her five-song EP. She did this all without a record label.

“One thing I think I had the great luxury in making this by myself, I sort of could use anything I could afford, and it could fulfill this vision I had, and of course the vision is shaped by your technology know-how and your budget capabilities,” she said. “All things considered, I’m quite happy with the result, and I’m also even happier with the experience, and everything I learned, looking over the engineers shoulders when you’re mixing, the whole recording process, taking a more producer role. I did the artwork with friend Alex, who’s a great photographer. It sounds like a middle of the road thing to say, but it was an awesome experience.”

Bell’s music hasn’t completely gone unnoticed. Spin magazine praised her, and some record execs have starting salivating over her brilliant music.

“There has been attention from labels, and it’s so interesting,” she said. “It’s kind of like dating where they’re like, what have you done, what are your plans. And you’re like, well, here’s what I’ve sort of done, but what do you see the plan as and what have you done. Everyone’s a little bit pensive and checking each other out. I guess I go back on forth on whether a label is really necessary. I think it’s sort of like, aside from the financial aspect of it, it’s like moral support. Ideally you’re working with people who are genuine about it, then there are people who are a team for you.”

Musically speaking, Bell’s transformation from strictly playing the piano to singing and learning about the side of sampling and musical experimentation.

“At first I was convinced that I was diverging from a classical piano career route,” Bell said. “I had this giant chip on my shoulder that I’m throwing away four pretty expensive years going to the Conservatory, but I was playing piano since I was seven.”

Bell said she didn’t quite know how to break the news to her mother, who previously wanted her daughter to play the piano. But Bell said her mother approved. Yet it’s still a subject Bell and her mother discuss to this day.

“I always still bring it up to my mom, you know,” she said. “ ‘Are you OK with the fact that I’m not a classical pianist,’ and she’s like, ‘Look, this whole music thing is for you to figure out what you need to be doing and what will make you happy and make use of your personal resources, then you just do it.’”

The pressure to become a classically trained pianist may have begun in her native Russia. Bell was born in Moscow and lived there until she moved with her mother and her adopted father to Alaska.

When young, aspiring musicians grow up in Moscow, their parents typically encourage them to attend the Moscow Conservatory. If Bell had remained in Moscow long past her 7th birthday, she may have become a product of the esteemed institution, one that has trained classical pianists, composers, vocalists, and violists.

“I got to spend two years at this really great music school, which is like a feeder school to the Moscow Conservatory,” Bell said. “I studied the recorder there with a clarinetist, who was a very reputable clarinet player in Moscow. I remember a few musical lessons.”

Bell has few memories of her life in Moscow. Then again, she moved from Moscow in 1990 to Alaska. In addition to her music lessons, she recalls, of all things to remember, fast food and hot dogs.

“When you think of everything as a child, there are snapshots, they are very vivid, but not terribly drawn out,” she said. “I actually remember standing in line when the first McDonald’s opened. We stood in this gigantic line for three hours, and I remember we finally got our filet of fish or whatever and it was so good. I remember thinking, American food is amazing. I remember the taste of Russian hot dogs, they’re really different from American hot dogs. You boil them. Nobody grills anything.”

After living with her parents in Alaska, Bell wanted to further her musical career and came to the Conservatory in Boston in 2001. She graduated from the Conservatory in 2005. She then moved to Brooklyn.

“Yeah, I went to school in Boston, the wicked good area up there,” she said. “I feel really lucky to sort of wound up there. Overall it teaches you something much more than what your there specifically to do. I think my experience at the Conservatory opened me up to so many different styles of music. Again, not to discount the really awesome people I studied with privately, but the best experiences there just broaden your ability to take in and process music. Ideally you get exposed to so many different styles and genres and types of performers.”

Although she has no label to call home (just yet), Bell still wants to tour and support her EP, which she sells through her website, olgabell.com.

“I hope that either late summer or early fall I could get a tour going. I hope that all of it materializes,” she said. “I don’t really want to use too much gas. I think it’d be great to get a vehicle where there are some elliptical machines built in where you can charge a battery and work out, so every time you roll into a town, people are like, ‘Whoa you look so svelte,’ and I wouldn’t have had to spend any money on gas.”

To Olga Bell, not having a record label to call home hasn’t affected her passion to continue writing and recording. Music has always been and always will be a major part of her life.

“I think you’ve found what you are meant to be when it really doesn’t feel like work and you don’t want to stop doing it,” she said. “This is my life. This is what’s happening now. The whole reason I started doing this, I get such an emotional rush and a full spectrum of incredible feeling. You want to channel that through yourself and turn it out to people as much as you can.”

Ones to Watch: Banjo Or Freakout

17/7/08
Banjo Or Freakout is one multi-instrumentalist Alessio Natalizia. His musical excursions under the brilliant moniker were born in moments of boredom, whilst waiting in his girlfriend's London flat for her return. Since that day he has become an ever-more prolific artist with one rule to his output: he records every track just once. It sets limitations but also encourages experimentalism, as he mutates and toys with the sound via his computer. The end result is some of the most eerily beautiful and transcendent music that at times calls to mind darker shades of Grizzly Bear's layered dream pop and the warped meanderings of Deerhunter.
His music is available for download via his blog. Along with his own material it also features a host of covers, from artists such as Bob Dylan, Why?, Velvet Underground and Kate Nash. With each artist he covers he never fails to display a masterful reinterpretation of other's work, articulating new emotions within well-loved songs. He manages to add a fragility and emotiveness to Foals' Hummer and new depths to Amy Winehouse's Back To Black– the later stripped almost beyond recognition, with just the whispered lyrics to signify it's starting point.

Banjo Or Freakout has already been tipped by Drowned In Sound as one to watch and has gigged with fellow stars in the ascendancy such as Telepathe and Afrikan Boy. He has also caught the attention of DFA Records, who praised Banjo Or Freakout in a recent feature in Plan B magazine.

A single is due out on the excellent No Pain In Pop in the autumn. Meanwhile keep your eyes peeled for live appearances in the near future.

Ones to Watch: Broadcast 2000

17/7/08 ‘Building Blocks’ is the debut release from Broadcast 2000, aka Devon born multi instrumentalist Joe Steer. On it he combines cello, double bass, guitar, ukulele, glockenspiel, banjo and percussion with his own layered vocals to mesmerising effect. Written, recorded, mixed and mastered in Joe's north London flat, ‘Building Blocks’ is a warm-hearted, beautiful collection of pop gems in the tradition of early Paul Simon.
From the fleet footed Viennese waltz of ‘Run’, to the forward turned optimism of ‘Don’t Weight Me Down’ and the twisted rhythm of ‘Get Up and Go’, which currently accompanies the Eon ad, this mini album is the perfect soundtrack to the summer.

The songs have a quirky charm highlighted by Steer's striking tenor voice, which has been compared to Sufjan Stevens and Chris Martin and by the beautiful arrangements and harmonies. Steer never intended to sing the songs himself. “I started writing the Broadcast 2000 songs always thinking I'd just down some vocals as a guide, then get a proper singer to sing them once I was happy with the tune", he explains. "I did a degree in music which involved things like composing for demodulated traffic noise, to be performed using multi-speaker 'diffusion' around a concert hall, as well as playing in the university orchestra and doing all the classical music theory stuff." Friends who heard the demos encouraged him to take over the vocal reigns himself.

Steer's rural origin also had a huge impact on his musical development: "Growing up the middle of Devon means you have little else that could possibly occupy your time apart from music. No football teams to support, no high street/shopping centre to hang around in. In fact the majority of my school buddies were in bands."

When playing live, Steer is joined by collaborators Chris Banner of up and coming band Lady and the Lost Boys and Tom Andrews, who are mainly employed "for their haircuts actually. They are very young, 18/19 and I feel like their weird old uncle."

Having already secured slots as Steve Lamacq’s Band Of The Week and 6 Music’s Newcomer Of The Week as well as an MTV Spanking New Session, the future looks very bright indeed for Broadcast 2000.

Live dates:

26 Jul 2008 London WILMINGTON ARMS with The Molotovs

Ones to Watch: Amazing Baby

17/7/08
They’re from Brooklyn, their number is somewhat indeterminate yet it’s fair to say they were formed at the end of 2007 by Will Roan & Simon O’Connor and they sound rather sprawling and musically ambitious; some would suggest psychedelic.
And so, on 14 July their self-produced 'Invisible Fucking Cross' EP will be released as a free download via the bands website, www.theamazingbaby.com

There are already plans afoot for the band to come to these shores towards the end of the year but between now and then they’ll begin work on their debut album with Claudius Mittendorfer who has previously worked with the likes of Muse and Interpol.

Ones to Watch: Anne Freier

16/7/08
Anne Freier is a highly prolific East German born, London based musician writing, performing, recording and producing songs, compositions for film and electro acoustic pieces. More than a touch reminiscent of Regina Spektor, her uniquely quirky and luscious melodies will have you hooked from the first listen.
Anne combines popular melodies, packaged in uncommon structures with often comical lyrics; making use of experimental and versatile styles. Her first four albums are: '§1', '§2', 'The Playmaker' and 'Dancing with the Sandman' - all written and produced within one year. She is currently producing her fifth album of which some songs can be already heard on myspace.

Here's the great thing for you: she plays at least one new song at nearly every gig, so you'll never get bored of that same old show most other bands and soloists put on. Since Anne is constantly writing and recording new songs her myspace playlist will change regularly, so keep on coming back to check out new tracks!

Ones to Watch: The Daisy Riots

15/7/08
Stumbling together with a youthful disregard for how to behave on stage, The Daisy Riots are a chance meeting between two suburban boys and a city dweller, and of course his 70’s drum kit. Gathering together a guitar and bass from many a willing friend it was left to Drew to take on additional noise duties (Guitar/Vocals) and Peter (Bass) joining Guy (Drums) to complete the band.
Many a bloodied instrument and tired smiles have led to The Daisy Riots debut single, ‘Do You Feel Alone?’ (Released July 28th). Recorded in Magnetic North studios with Rick MacNamara of Embrace, the song is three heartfelt minutes of youthful aggressive pop. Essential.

Although the essence of the band is found in their frenzied live show The Daisy Riots still insist that pop melodies still matter.

“The idea was to make as much noise as possible, throw in the best possible hook…..if we manage to do that, it’s always a good days work..”

The Daisy Riots are playing the following shows :

18th July Krak On @ Rooz Studios, London
4th August, The End Club, Newcastle
6th August, Roadhouse, Manchester

Ones to Watch: Pavilion

10/7/08 Having been together for just over two short years, Pavilion have recently toured with the likes of Glasvegas, Yeasayer, Tiny Dancers and those Cribs boys and unusually for most bands Pavilion change their live set every night to keep things interesting for both them and their growing fanbase.
Wakefield’s Postcard Records infused four piece release their debut single ‘Spoils Of War’ - Produced by The Cribs’ Ryan Jarman with Edwyn Collins at his North London studios. ‘Spoils Of War’ will be the debut release from West Yorkshire quartet Pavilion on Sept 1st through fast growing independent label Alcopop Records. Having previously released records for Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Tubelord and 4 or 5 Magicians the label is rapidly proving its reputation for finding great UK talent early.

Pavilion recorded the previously unheard ‘Spoils Of War’ in May this year at West Heath studios in London. Home to the studio work of both Edwyn Collins and Bernard Butler, Edwyn (who had seen the band play in their hometown 6 months earlier) very kindly provided the services of his studio and engineer to Ryan Jarman – who was getting stuck into his debut role as a producer for this recording.

The band also recently caught the eye of London based music video and short film director Dan Fernbach, who was so impressed by them when he saw them play with The Cribs that he contacted them offering his services FOC! The band quickly took him up on that and filmed the clip for ‘Spoils Of War’ at five different locations around London – dressed as bruised and battered World War II Soldiers. The video can currently be seen on the bands Myspace page.

Pavilion will tour their brand new (ever-changing) set across the UK from mid-July with shows already booked in Glasgow, Manchester, York, Brighton, Leeds, Cardiff and London among others.

Ones to Watch: Manda Rin

10/7/08 Manda Rin, aka Amanda MacKinnon, is instantly recognisable from cult electro-punk pop trio Bis. About a year after the band formed in 1994, they appeared on Top of the Pops. Bis went on to record three albums, release a Greatest Hits, and tour with the likes of the Foo Fighters, Ash, Garbage, Super Furry Animals and Gary Numan. Now Manda is continuing to dabble in disco-punk, but with a strong guitar pop edge. She claims her new direction is influenced by acts like The Gossip, CSS, New Young Pony Club, To My Boy, Blood Red Shoes and her new favourite band Late Of The Pier.
MANDA RIN releases her debut solo long-player, MY DNA, through This Is Fake DIY Records on Monday 8th September 2008. The new album will be preceded by the single, DNA, which is released digitally on 18th August and physically - on seven-inch vinyl - on 25th August.

The track-listing for the 12 song album is as follows:

1. DNA
2. Typeface
3. Bad Things Happen To Bad People
4. Guilty Pleasures
5. Do The Static
6. The Word Out
7. Break Up / Breakdown
8. Love To Hate You
9. No Language
10. Less Than Zero
11. Black Book
12. Bruises

Having contributed to the odd side project – the band, Juno!, and Japanese project, Meister - Manda is now focused on her own solo music. The first single, DNA, is an explosive track packed full of phat, disco-punk basslines and edgy, up tempo poppy guitar riffs. Team this with Manda Rin’s familiar attitudinal voice and staccato style and you have one seriously dynamic, energy fuelled track. This is a colourful, impressive tune set to position Manda Rin in a firm class of her own in the Scottish music scene. Rupert Noble who has worked with bands including the Long Blondes and Electrelane will direct the video for DNA.

MANDA RIN will appear at following date to support the release of the new album:

September
Mon 8th, The Fly, New Oxford Street, London - £7 www.ticketweb.co.uk

With her signing to This Is Fake DIY Records, MANDA RIN will be label mates with acts such as We Are The Physics, Popular Workshop, Duels, and 4 or 5 Magicians.

Vocalist and guitarist Richard says of Meccano “It‘s based around an imaginary conversation between two old friends and the distance growing between them as their lives go on. It’s about the regret of a passing friendship”.

Ones to Watch: Stricken City debut single and London dates

1/7/08
Stricken City play pop songs, lingering on lovers and tramps jumping between places and pictures... "We like catchy melodies, one note guitar solos and lots of reverb" says lead singer Rebekah Raa. Here is the kind of sparkling ethereal pop that fills warehouse parties with a sea of loose-limbed shape pullers, amidst white wine spilling from plastic cups. Where guitar echoes off concrete walls and bare plasterboard, and strip lights and cymbals build to a deafening delirium.
Tak o Tak / Bardou is the debut single from Stricken City, released on limited edition 7" on Adventures Close To Home on 28th July, and available now for free download at www.strickencity.com

Watch the video:

With opaque lyrics and a conversely translucent melody, Tak o Tak is a fervent pop gem, propelled by scattergun guitar, skipping beats, and a hookline of analogue synth. Sharing the a-side is Bardou, a more mystical and freeform affair, telling the tale of a forgotten village in the mountains of southern France.

Stricken City are: Rebekah Raa (vocals and Korg), Iain Pettifer (guitar) Espen Dahl (bass) and Kit Godfrey (drums). Drawing on the deceptive innocence and lo-fi stylings of Young Marble Giants, Life Without Buildings and Bow Wow Wow, the music of Stricken City is immediate and addictive, yet their songs withhold secrets long after the party is over.

FORTHCOMING CLUB DATES:
4th JULY, LONDON, ADVENTURES CLOSE TO HOME @ The Barfly.
12th JULY, LONDON, BE @ PROUD GALLERIES, with Ipso Facto.
25th JULY, LONDON, KILL THE MUSIC @ Bardens Boudoir.

Ones to Watch: Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele

30/6/08
Dent May has a magnificent Ukulele. He has played it since his mother taught him at a very young age. Over the years he has spent time dabbling with other instruments and writing pop songs inspired by the bands of the 60’s like The Zombies and The Association. Ultimately though, 23 year old Dent’s heart is with the tiny guitar that is the Ukulele. From Jackson Mississippi, his debut single release is a double A side on Make Mine, 4000 miles away in the UK. Make Mine is the Boutique 7” label that previously released singles from Fryars, The Books and Plastic Little. Distance proves no boundaries for this label, who champion truly individual and quality artists, no matter what genre.
In an ideal world Dent May would be Lee Hazelwood, still searching for his Nancy, he is obsessed by songs from the era when elaborate vocal harmonies and self indulgent melodies dominated. Currently fascinated by the Smile bootlegs of Brian Wilson it doesn’t seem like current day trends have any real bearing on his song writing. Rather bizarrely too, Dent has always been a fan The Partridge Family and in 10th Grade took a road trip to Biloxi Grand Casino to see Shirley Jones (Mrs Partridge) play, according to him, ‘she brought down the house’. In the Video for ‘Oh Paris’ a Shirley Jones tour poster can be spotted if you have a keen eye.

In The Garden is a beautiful song about forbidden romance with a ‘Miss Caroline’, loaded with plenty of ooh’s, ahh’s and sunny harmonies. Oh Paris tells an idyllic love song about the city of Paris, a place that fascinates and enamors Dent. Recorded in his bedroom on less than entirely legally obtained software, both tracks demonstrate his love and affinity for tropical pop.

Dent currently resides in Taylor Mississippi in a double wide trailer (with Jacuzzi!) where he is part of an art collective called Cats Purring. Cats Purring finished a tour in March this year, which started in Arkansas and culminated with three shows in New York. Lets hope he makes it across the pond soon, in the meantime this very special release will be out July 28th.

Ones to Watch: Mugison - the next big Icelandic export

26/6/08 In 2001 Mugison met his first laptop – a used Mac, most likely stolen or over borrowed from a poor philosophy student in Iceland.

Inside the laptop he discovered a hard drive filled with songs and the ability to burn songs on to CDRs. Using this acquired ability he came up with a quick money making scheme, sold 70 copies to his grandmother and bought a ticket to London...
It was here that Mugison met a man by the name of Joshua who had been living in the streets since he was 9 and supported himself by DJ-ing. They discussed Mugison’s little business and decided that instead of burning the same music onto CDs like Mugison had been doing, they would record their own. Over the next few years, Mugison recorded some tracks. Those tracks came together to make the album, “Lonely Mountain”.

By that time Mugison met Matthew Herbert who loved his album and offered to release it on his label, Accidental Records. To Mugison’s despair, Matthew also loved the packaging of the demo – a handmade paper case stitched together with a needle and thread. So, Mugison spent the following year stitching 13,000 copies of Lonely Mountain together. On the bright side, Mugison finally had enough money to return home to Iceland. Where he started work on his new record, “Mugimama (is this monkey music?)”.

Mugison moved to the Icelandic countryside, to the West fjords where the sun doesn't shine for 9 months of the year and you have to work for 14 hours a day in order not to freeze to death. He met a girl named RĂșna and they settled in the small town of Sudavik where he built a studio in the garage. “Mugimama” was released in 2005 and earned Mugison 5 awards at the Icelandic Music Awards, including album of the year! Accidental Records also released this album in Europe, which led to touring Europe and North America. Mugison hit the road, armed with his guitar and laptop, playing any gig that would put him up for the night and would buy him a few rounds after the show. He also got to support some of his favorite artists, among them Matthew Herbert, Super Furry Animals, Ghostigital, and Fantomas.

When Mugison got back from touring his wife RĂșna had given birth to two Mugiboys, Dyri and Eldar. Soon thereafter, she bought a house next to her mother in Sudavik. As the story goes, the guy who owned the laptop showed up on his doorstep and wanted his laptop back. With no laptop, Mugison decided to get a band of flesh and bones to provide the rhythm, licks, chords, and hooks. Mugison says that all the musicians came to him in a dream, each had a special gift and together they made the perfect unit - one on one on one on one on one makes the perfect Circle of Fifths.

Mugison then spent the next three years locked in his studio. His goal: to make a rock ‘n roll album like you’ve never heard before, spanning every note on the emotional scale while at the same time being the most honest rock ‘n roll album you’ll ever hear. Mugison will take you on a ride, spill his guts in front of everybody, rip his heart out and serve it on a plate to make you angry, happy, sad, horny……all at the same time.

That thrill ride is called “Mugiboogie” and it’s been let loose in Iceland. Are you ready?

Jesus is a Good Name to Moan Single Promo Video - some soft porn to brighten your day
It’s the first song I wrote for the album (Mugiboogie) It’s a sexual song, I did it on tour. Sex is a difficult thing on tour because your woman is at home, you only got Skype…… and you have to work around things.
The sexual reference to Jesus - well I was thinking about the Big Jesus was conceived without intercourse and I think God put a curse on all women after that and made them moan ‘Jesus’ or ‘God’ whilst peaking in their climax. It’s like theory - a life time research topic…
