Gigs // Ellen and The Escapades
For a little lady, Ellen Smith has impressive lungs. While her sonorous tones are not booming, there is a richness that can drop as low as a whisper without ever losing its strength.
She and her band The Escapades, playing to an intimate crowd at the Wheelbarrow in Camden, begin the proceedings with an atmospheric instrumental. Starting quietly with finger-picked acoustic guitar, it builds into a thundering crescendo of electric guitar, electric piano and snare drum to give a full palette of sound. Next there is the driving pulse of a bass drum that sets the pace of a country charge, a slightly off the beat bass galloping beside it and in we are drawn.

Gigs // Yann Tiersen
When entering the roundhouse for the Yann Tiersen gig, I see many people confusingly scan the stage: "where is the piano?" Not a surprising reaction: the French musician, here to promote his new album, 'Skyline', gained world fame composing the soundtrack of Amélie: romantic, Parisian piano music. But when the six-man strong band starts playing its first tunes, heavy electric bass accompanied by flashing lasers, it immediately becomes clear that Yann is determined to take us on a ride that will expose his variety and versatility to the fullest.
Gigs // Bombay Bicycle Club
I can barely type this as my hands are aching from Bombay Bicycle Club’s gig last night at Brixton Academy. Who knew every track of theirs was so worthy of hands-above-your-head anthem-style clapping? I mean, I know their rhythms are particularly catchy, but it’s a totally different story listening to their live drum beats and melodic keyboard tunes - the audience just couldn’t help themselves. It was great! Not only do I feel more cultured, but fitter too.

Gigs // Scroobius Pip
In the words of another great rapper (Justin Timberlake), Scroobius Pip is “bringing Sexy Back”. And in this case, literally with his sexy back.
