JAMES YUILL'S SWEET LOVE ON RECORD AND SCREEN
Like many music lovers of his generation James Yuill has a passion for both the emotional songwriting and atmospheres of artists such as Nick Drake, Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens and the visceral beats and dynamic rhythms of Justice, Chemical Brothers and Aphex Twin.
Unlike anyone else however, James has fused these seemingly disparate influences into a magical sound of his very own, something that hasn't gone un-noticed by radio, with DJs including Huw Stephens, Colin Murray, Zane Lowe and John Kennedy all championing him on air.
With two single releases - 'No Surprise' and 'No Pins Allowed' - already under his belt this year, James is now ready to drop the album Turning Down Water For Air on the small but perfectly formed musical powerhouse that is Moshi Moshi. But before this comes the sublime beauty of 'This Sweet Love': combining tightly worked songwriting with some artfully executed beat science, this an infectious Balearic belter that takes up residence in your skull and then claims squatters' rights.
Space-disco-don Prins Thomas created a 'sneaky edit' of the track entirely off his own back with his own DJ sets in mind, but he's happy to share, bless him, so you can download it here at James's blog: http://jamesyuill.wordpress.com/2008/09/16/this-sweet-love-prins-thomas-sneaky-edit/
If 'This Sweet Love' hints heavily at James Yuill's unique talent, it is with the album Turning Down Water For Air that the full scope of his musical vision becomes apparent. The album title refers to the dilemma of "giving up something you need for something else that's equally important" and the many lyrical references to drowning hint at the emotional depths that lie behind his songwriting. But with his music taking him further than he ever imagined, the future only looks bright for James Yuill.
