GOLDEN SILVERS INTERVIEW

Golden Silvers are a band favoring drums, keys and bass, and their songs are beautiful retro-pop and completely dance-tastic. The threesome won this year's Glastonbury unsigned competition and look set for very big things indeed. We have a chat with front man Gwilym Gold to see how their golden quest is shaping up.

noize: Hi guys! So what's happening in the world of Golden Silvers today?

Gwilym Gold: We just got back from doing 3 date with crystal castles and now we're preparing to head of on our first proper tour on monday... we've also just recieved mastered copies of our next single

n: So first of all, can we just get a bit of background, how did you all meet and what made you decide to form the band?

GG: Me and Alexis have known each other for a while and have been playing together on various things for a long time. We knew Ben as guitarist and when he grew his moustache we knew we needed this love god in the band so he converted to bass and the rest is the future.

n: I guess one of the most obvious things that, at first glance, sets you apart from most other bands is the lack of guitars. Was that always a conscious decision that you didn't want that element to your sound or was it just how things happened because of who was involved?

GG: More just how it happened becuase of who was involved. I played the keys and we just didn't feel that a guitarist was a necessity althought we sometimes expand the band for live shows and will probably do this more in the future

n: You won this years Glastonbury Unsigned competition, well done! How much did it mean to win that, has it opened up a lot of doors for you since?

GG: Winning it didn't really mean that much in itself but it's been good because a lot of the people who were judges on the competition have been very supportive since. Huw Stephens has been championing us on the radio ever since.

n: How was your Glastonbury 2008 experience? How was your set and your weekend there overall? How did it compare to playing the Isle of Wight festival as well?

GG: Yeah, it was good. we played 4 gigs over the course of the weekend. So it was pretty busy. Isle of Wight was fun as well but much smaller and didn't really have the same atmosphere although there was free stronbow tap backstage for any cider drinkers!

n: You recently supported Mystery Jets on tour, how was that? What are those guys like to tour with - any rock n roll backstage antics?

GG: Supporting the mystery jets was fun. there was a sense of camaraderie that you don't always get when supporting bands. on the last night we did with them, we walked past one of the spare dressing rooms and Will (guitarist) was in there singing one of our songs and everyone ended up having a singalong! we're playing with them some more in October

n: So the rather brilliant and much talked about debut single 'Arrows of Eros' was a big success, how was it for you guys to actually get a single out there proper and what plans are in place for the next one?

GG: All the radio and press stuff made it really exciting cause it felt like something was happening. Our next single is coming out in October. it's going to be a double a side Magic Touch and Another Universe are the 2 tracks and we're putting it out on our label called Bronze Records named after our Bronze Club nights at the Macbeth.

n: So might plans be afoot for the debut album? If so how far down the line are they, what excitement is in store?

GG: Yeah, we want to record the album as soon as we can and it will probably be out next year in march or around then. we haven't actually got any dates set yet though. we just want to get this next single out there first and then see what's next...

n: So what next for Golden Silvers, what kind of things have you got planned for the next few coming months? Anything you're especially excited about?

GG: We're heading of on our first headline tour in September and we're going all around the country. We're really excited about it. We're doing some dates in October with the Mystery Jets. In November we're probably going to be doing some dates with Noah and the Whale and the Wombats among other things. We're mostly excited about recording some new music.
