Feeder – ‘We Are the People’ (single review)

This Welsh band sort of got lost in the U.K. pop punk rise in the 1990s and early 21st century. Shit, so many punk and nu-metal bands were almost all but ignored due in large part to the Britpop scene. No one could dethrone Blur -- for crying out loud, no one still can -- so Feeder just sort of slid under the radar and did so in a do-it-yourself way. They didn’t have the backing of any major label, so to be able to persevere primarily on their own, Feeder quite did an admirable job.

Feeder, now comprised of Grant Nicholas on vocals and guitar, Mark Richardson on drums, and Taka Hirose on bass, also survived the devastating shock of former drummer Jon Lee’s 2002 suicide. The band carried on; Nicholas said it was something Jon would’ve wanted. Over the next few years, Feeder went from an edgy rock band to a more subtle sounding pop-punk outfit. The band’s singles collection in 2006 seemingly ended its playing days, so everyone thought -- except for Feeder. Now back with their first studio album in three years, Feeder’s gained their edge back.

“We Are the People,” the latest track off the recently released album Silent Cry, highlights the Grant Nicholas’ solid vocals of the early years. The record opens with a near identical guitar and drum arrangement of Foo Fighters’ “My Hero,” and that’s not such a bad thing at all. Obviously Nicholas is no Dave Grohl and ultimately Feeder are by no means the Foos, but “We Are the People” carries enough energy to make Feeder relevant again. Put behind you the past couple studio albums. These boys have returned to put pop punk back on the map and perhaps distance themselves from their early music competitors.
