Attic Lights – Interview

Formed in Glasgow’s West-End, Attic Lights' sound was moulded in a secluded attic until Kev, Tim, Colin, Noel and Jamie were happy with the magic they had created. Inspired by The Beach Boys, Flaming Lips, Teenage Fanclub and Guided By Voices, these boys are planning their imminent takeover. We grabbed some precious moments to get to grips with some attic lit basics.
noize: Hi guys! So then, what do you think your biggest achievement has been so far?

Attic Lights: Getting singed to Island Records. It was bloody hard going to get that far. Although, the hard work never really stops. The day we signed felt really good though.

n: What is it you love most about being on tour?

AL: Getting to play music for a living. That's it basically. That's about as good as it gets. Playing songs you wrote to cheering audiences to whom these songs really seem to mean something.

n: Any tourbus gossip you're willing to share with us?

AL: I'm rubbish at gossip. Particularly coz I don't have a social life. However, if you want to know about rare Guided By Voices vinyl B-sides, or Jim O'Rourke side projects then I'm your man. Musical nerdom is kinda my thing.

n: What kind of things do you all get up to while on tour?

AL: Attic Lights like a drink now and then. More often 'now' than 'then.' I will let you imagine the rest of the ensuing havoc. Suffice to say, we are getting a reputation as a band that likes to party after shows. I'm trying to work out if that's a good reputation or not.

n: So how did you come up with your band name, Attic Lights then?

AL: We started rehearsing and writing songs in Colin's Attic which he had decked out with candles and fairy lights. Hence the name. We used to sit up there every weeekend playing and writing music, getting drunk and stoned and generally having a good time shutting out the outside world.

n: Where and how did you all meet and form the band?

AL: Colin and I went to school and uni together and the rest of the guys sort of joined one by one. It happened kind of organically and we tended to all become friends first then band mates later.

n: If you had to sum up the songs from your forthcoming album in five words, what five words would you use?

AL: Great songs with blaring guitars and compulsive harmonies. (I don't know what makes a harmony compulsive but i hope our songs do.)

n: You have a large fan base, so do you ever get weird fan e-mails or letters and things??

AL: Yup. Get some really crazy emails, letters etc... Probably best not to go into it. Don't want to encourage the nutters you understand.

n: What did you all want to do when you were younger?

AL: This is all any of us have ever wanted to do. Which makes it kinda lucky that we are doing it.

n: While we're on the childhood topic, what were your favourite sweets when you were kids?

AL: I used to love Penny whoppers but I tasted then recently after a fifteen year hiatus and they were disgusting. My past has been sullied.

n: If you were on a desert island, what four things could you not live without? no cheating by saying a boat, plan or car – it's got to be real, think Lost.

AL: Astral Weeks by Van Morrison. Something to play music on. A really long book. (War and Peace?) A beautiful woman. A large and comfortable bed.

n: What do you guys do during the day, when your not living the rock n roll dream?

AL: Rehearse, write songs and stress out about things. The reality of the dream has turned out to be quite hard work, but I'm not complaining.

n: What's your favourite venue to play in the UK?

AL: The Barrowlands in Glasgow.

n: Favourite band of the moment, signed and unsigned?

AL: Unsigned: Isosceles. Signed: Glasvegas

n: Favourite band of all time?

AL: REM ? ( I change my answer to this all the time. Usually dependant on who I'm currently obsessed with listening to.)

n: Any final words of wisdom to leave us with?

AL: I've always liked the word 'Sedition'
