Teenagersintokyo - 'Very Vampyr' (single review)

Bands have become obsessed with Tokyo even though none of their members hail from the land of the rising sun. From the Canadian pop-punk foursome Tokyo Police Club to the German pop disaster Tokio Hotel, bands continue to bow down to the hippest city in the Far East.

With Samantha Lim on vocals, Miska Mandic playing the keyboard, Linda Marigliano creating subtle but very effective basslines, Sophie McGinn running lead guitar, and Rudy Udovich hitting the skins, teenagersintokyo actually come from the land down under. The Australian five piece bounce onto the dance punk/electro rock scene with their latest single, “Very Vampyr.”

This addictive Sleater-Kinney-meets-the-dance floor track would make the indie hipsters want to trade in their favorite DIY rockers for these new wave revivalists, even if just for the three minutes and six seconds this track runs. These girls, and one boy, have made themselves comfortable on the electroclash scene, not afraid to tred on the same ground as CSS, Ladyhawke, and Peaches (minus the over-the-top glam).

There not teens, nor are they from Tokyo, but the all important name add's to a following in this industry, if it works your onto a winner. Their an Australian formed, mainly girl fronted band + 1 guy. The genre? It's cool and catchy, indie-rawness at it's most fashionable, expect to be hearing this band on approach to Topshop.

'Very Vampyr' has the recipe for success. Blazing beats of the drum, undiluted talent, and certain quirkiness and confidence in there musical approach and leading vocals. The rise in this type of music is on the up with bands like Gossip, Crystal Castles, New Young Pony Club and Foals, and Teenagersintokyo are sure to be chased by the NME soon enough.
