Ones to Watch: The Rrrs
The Rrrs (pronounced with a roll of the tongue, ‘rrrrrrrrr’) are a convergence of individuals with a love of art-rock and pop who, after 3 years of gigging and honing their sound, are all set to release their debut double A side single My Valentino/ Forbidden Kiss. The band’s constituent members are Rowan Gifted, Tom Rocket, Les Woods and are completed by feisty songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Sharzilla Moog from Singapore. Moog brings to the fray a hugely distinctive vocal style that compliments the band’s rattling approach wonderfully. Up-tempo guitar pop, even motown, is the order of things for the single’s lead track My Valentino and makes for an addictive high energy introduction to the band.
The single’s A side Forbidden Kiss is a much more dreamy affair which places Moog’s wild crooning in a much more sedate environment; one in which it has to be said she’s equally at home in. Bolstered by the intricate pitter-patter of drum cymbals, the song is proving as popular as the lead track, even if it stands as a bit of a departure from The Rrrs’ customary over the top methods.
Not quite reinforcing the band’s overtly jolly ethos is B side, Credit Crunch. As the name suggests, it’s a tale that many independent artists can probably relate to – not quite having the cash to make ends meet, but getting on with it anyway. Musically, it’s a darker, brasher take on the fast paced ramshackle buzz of My Valentino.
Aiming to fuse indie-pop with South East Asian influences, and putting out a single with 3 very varied tracks on it, this certainly puts The Rrrs up there as a very interesting future prospect.
