Natty – ‘Cold Town’ (single review)

Granted, Natty has toured with Kate Nash, but his music isn’t as gratingly irritating or vacuous as this might suggest, if ‘Cold Town’ is to be taken as a typical example of his oeuvre. While the line ‘Come on and give a hoody a hug/They don’t bite’ made me shudder a little, it’s intentions are thankfully satirical; close-minded Daily Mail readers are unflinchingly lampooned, their opinions placed on a pedestal and derided accordingly with lines like “Take what you can from the English man/Then you build yourself a palace back in Pakistan”.

The music is light and uplifting, with a summery reggae tinge to Natty’s acoustic guitar, which is reinforced well by his exotically accented vocals; overall, this is a pop song, and an obvious attempt at a summer hit, but a pretty decent one and definitely preferable to constant plays of Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.
