Frightened Rabbit @ Dexters, Dundee 8/5/08 (live review)

Kicking the night off on a high which was set to continue, Stop Tracks showed all the promise of inspired youthful upstarts. They were soon to be followed by a truly outstanding live band, the Tom Fun Orchestra, rockabilly mayhem from a band as plentiful in instruments as Canadian counterparts Arcade Fire. They were amazing; completely destroying the preconception that I had already seen my favourite support act of the year after a mesmerising performance from Go! Team support, Screaming Tea Party. Numbering nine members in total, they proved as eclectic as they looked, creating instant toe tapping climatic stompers which provoked mass flooding towards the dance floor. Accordian, trumpet, fiddle, banjo, bass, drums, two electric guitars and an acoustic came together to create the sound of a ceilidh band injected with the venom of rock n’ roll. An inspirational sound that I’m sure we’ll hear a lot more of in the future. Check them out.

All of this before I’d even seen the headliners. Fair play to them, choosing a band like that to support you is a very brave choice; Frightened Rabbit were eclipsed before they had even begun. Still, for the type of music they play, in the vein of The Twilight Sad and generic in comparison to their support, they play it very well. Always professional in approach, stopping in an intro to fix a slipping microphone stand for example, these guys were a little too serious and never appeared completely relaxed. Maybe that had something to do with the poor attendance, or the drunken hecklers, still it would have been nice to see them smile.

Crowd interaction was limited and reflected unease, “Did anyone take the day off today?” was a puzzling example of why their music is better than their banter. The night culminated with a soaring and spirited rendition of Square 9, leaving us wondering why the crowd was so few in numbers. A jolly pleasant evening altogether.
