dEUS – ‘The Architect / Slow’ (single review)

dEUS hails from Belgium and has apparently been around since the mid-nineties. The band has also had a rotating line-up of members since their creation - dEUS is currently made up of Tom Barman and Mauro Pawlowski (both vocals and guitar), drummer Stephane Misseghers, bassist Alan Gevaert and Klaas Janzoons (keyboards and violin).

They have released several albums, had a couple of Indie hits and even toured with the Kings Of Brit-Pop, Blur. It is obvious that dEUS should be better well-known than they are right now - even if one was to base their opinion on the strength of these current tracks ‘The Architect’ and the previously released ‘Slow’ featuring Karin Dreijer Andersson from The Knife, alone. It is really hard to understand how they have managed to fly under the radar for so long as both tracks really help to further push the boundaries of Indie music and its traditional ‘sound’ that is inherent in both Europe and the UK.

The originality of the band and their Euro-funk-rock sound has really help to set them apart from their contemporaries. Where many others are just content to tow the line, the dEUS has created a unique sound that is a true audio delight and extremely enjoyable to listen too.

The provocative lyrics and the use of interesting samples in the first track ‘The Architect’ allow each song to stand alone in its own unique way making for easy listening. The distinctive drum work for the haunting, and ethereal sound created in ‘Slow’ helps the band’s sound by adding a distinctive ‘trademark’ to it, marking it as a separate success and a far cry from the funky-rocked out, The Architect.

I am sure that everyone will find something in each of the tracks that they can relate that will also enable them to enjoy the musical sophistication of the dEUS.
And I’ll be looking out for more from this band – I only hope that it doesn’t take another 20 or so years before it happens.
