Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip @ Birmingham Academy2 3/5/08 (live review)
Walking in to the Academy 2 to the sound of Producers with Computers was a jarring start to the night. The subject of some hype in the music world, it was disappointing to learn that actually they come off as a kind of less-imaginative, less-talented and more-grating Hadouken. Their sole half-decent song struck the audience as slightly ironic with the lyrics “We know that you like us / You know that you do”. Why some bands fail to grasp that writing one line then shouting it over and over does not a good song make is beyond me.
Fortunately, that doesn't apply to the next act to appear. Brummie local Polar Bear sauntered on to entertain the crowd with some spoken word between musical sets, proving himself an insightful and witty performer, telling his autobiographical story with the kind of lyrical mastery Producers with Computers can only dream of.
And the night just gets better from there. Gideon Conn is a star in the making. A more lyrically-speedy Jamie T, accompanied by guitars, drums and a trombone player (and kudos to any band that can pull that off), the crowd was smitten by the end. Even Scroob himself was spotted by canny gig-goers watching the performance from the back, sporting a t-shirt with Gideon's grinning mug printed on the front.
Another appearance from Polar Bear, and the crowd finally gets what they have been waiting for. Both now sporting beards, Dan le Sac and Scroobius Pip make their way on-stage. The intimate venue was filled with noise as the duo commanded the room. Spinning through well-known favourites like Beat that my Heart Skipped, new single Look for the Woman and NME's single of the week last Easter Thou Shalt Always Kill, Scroob's unique vocals rain down the crowd, wowing them into awed submission. Other songs from the upcoming album are well-received, especially Angles, in which Scroob dons different props to illustrate the different characters. Also note-worthy was his sexual dance with a hat-rack...I'll leave it to your imagination as to which song that was to.
On paper, Dan le Sac VS Scroobius Pip shouldn't work. And yet, here we are – lyrics so painfully intelligent and heart-breakingly accurate that once you've heard them, you can see them everywhere, over captivating beats and addictive riffs, sung by a chubby guy with sideburns and an overly-bearded cockney. It shouldn't work. But give them a listen and see if you can resist. Just a band? We'll see.
