Cut Copy – ‘In Ghost Colours’ (album review)

Cut Copy return after a four-year absence with their second offering, a beautiful, dreamy journey through abstract ideas of the past and hopeful visions of the future.

Very much influenced by frontman Dan Whitford’s obsession with the 80s, each synth-fuelled track provides a smooth, relaxing soundtrack to the day’s activities.

To say what genre In Ghost Colours would fall into would be impossible. While the 80s influence is definitely there, and not shy about being seen, a regular maelstrom of other influences push their way to the forefront as well; ranging from soft rock to electro-pop to a kind-of fuzzy dance, sometimes all within the same song.

This is definitely not “centre-of-attention” music – neither the beat nor the vocals are too demanding, making the album something to put on while relaxing in the sunshine or driving along with the windows wound down. You will probably find yourself bobbing along or humming the tunes without even realising it.

And in this way, the band have cleverly managed to make a must-have album, not by forging new musical pathways or rapid-firing ‘socially relevant’ lyrics at the listener, but by creating a retro-futuristic sleepy mammoth that plucks gems from all corners of the musical world, and as such will be as listenable and enjoyable in fifty years time as it is today.
