Of The I - Album Sampler (unsigned review)
In preparation for their debut album release in June, London 5-piece Of The I have released three tracks as an album sampler.
They have an epic sound that updates the ideas of prog-rock into the modern era. There are fuzzy guitar riffs, complex drum lines and dreamy pianos here in abundance.
'Between Being & Ego' is a re-recording of a track that was on the bands DIY 'Demonoid EP' and is a down-tempo track led by a simple piano line that keeps the fanciful flights of the other instruments anchored. The lyrics are short and repeated throughout the track to create a feel that the vocals are just another instrument in the mix. The over-all feel of the track is one of dreamy contemplation with an undertow of disquiet.
'Modern Equivalent' keeps the same pieces in place from the opening track but kicks up the tempo a touch. This time the anchor is a loopy guitar riff that eventually melts into a spiky thrash for the chorus. The slightly syncopated drum line adds to the general feeling of angst.
Final track on the sampler 'Single Units' is the first on to let go a little. While the other tracks are low key and hang together perfectly, the final track goes a different direction. This is a high paced, fractured track where all the elements seem to be doing completely different things from each other and yet it fits together perfectly. It's an exhilarating mix of powerful bass, strong drums and punchy vocals to create a track that should be discordant but is just exciting.
This is not a band that follows the traditional pattern of having a rhythm section underpinning guitar and vocals that tell the story of the track. At any time any instrument (including voice) could be doing anything so this is music that comes from unexpected directions. This is a band that probably won't ever be commercially successful, but damn it they should. It's 10 times more exciting than the cookie-cutter rock that you hear everywhere.
The album these tracks come from will be released in June and the bands 'Demonoid EP' is available from several sources on the net for free download.
