Crystal Castles + Skibunny DJs @ Stiff Kitten, Belfast 23/4/08 (live review)
Warming up the dance floor for the dynamic duo, Crystal Castles, is another equally hotly hyped boy/girl DJ combo spinning under the alias of Skibunny. The Belfast based two-some have taken their now infamous sets compiled of the freshest Indie tracks combined with old school anthems spanning the genres from continent to continent, even rocking it as far as Japan. For tonight though, they’re throwing out the same standard set of awesomeness as usual, typical of their increasingly popular Saturday night residency at Auntie Annie’s. It’s nothing but speaker blasting beats with a lightshow to match from here to the end of their set and judging by the crowd reaction, Crystal Castles will have to pull something special out of the bag to prove they deserve to be headlining.
A hooded Ethan Kath appears onstage working in a concentrated trance at the various pieces of equipment before him as Alice Glass bounces on in front of him, mike in hand, ready to take the crowd. After a long lead in they drop their glitch rich remix of Atlantis to Interzone originally by dance floor heroes Klaxons of course.
Alice jumps around onstage with the boundless energy of a crazed young foal throwing herself into the crowd but still managing to shout her parts out in time. The sweaty mass dances harder when they fire out “Alice Practice” mid-way as well as dropping new single “Courtship Dating”. You could never imagine that two Canadians could make video game sound effects with keyboards and drums sound so perfect.
