IAMX – ‘The Alternative’ (album review)

Now, I have had this CD for pretty much a year now. I have been to see this band in tiny little clubs in London. But finally, and deservedly, IAMX have found a UK release for their second album, ‘The Alternative’. For those of you who remember the mid-90s trip-hop scene with particular vividness, IAMX is fronted by Chris Corner, the man who made Sneaker Pimps such an original and exciting band.

Now, IAMX is a quite different beast from Sneaker Pimps. Gone are the chilled out tones and subtleties that made them so interesting. But IAMX is altogether a better prospect. Sexy, confused music which sounds like a wonderful mixture of rock, electro and dance, the opener ‘President’ sounds like an odd mix of politics and burlesque, whilst ‘The Negative Sex’ is what would happen if Muse’s ‘Plug In Baby’ was given a wonderful electro touch.

IAMX are going to be chucked in with the current indie electro scene, and although there are similarities, this band are so much better – bigger sounding, with a real attempt to break the mould, IAMX deserve to be huge. It’s been said of them that their songs would sound equally at home in a tiny club or a massive arena, and that pretty much sums them up: all encompassing. And quite honestly, they deserve it. This is a fantastic record.
